Opel Rocks-e Review (2024)

Opel's electric model, Rocks Electric, emerged as the winner of the recent "Design Hack" competition and stands as the sole example of its kind, now bearing the name Opel Rocks e-XTREME. Engineers involved in the production process paid meticulous attention to every detail, pushing the boundaries of the Rocks Electric model within the workshop where Opel's concept vehicles take shape. This groundbreaking concept model was brought to life based on the winning design by Industrial Design Student Lukas Wenzhöfer. Anticipated to reach a broader audience in the coming months, this experience is bound to make waves.

Opel hosted the competition with the theme of "Electric Mobility Solutions in Urban Transportation," and Lukas Wenzhöfer's concept came out on top. The model was produced under the name Rocks e-XTREME, bringing the project to fruition. Among the designs evaluated by the #OpelDesignHack jury, this model stood out, aligning with the brand's promise of "You Design, We Produce." Opel Rocks Electric's production version already represents innovative transportation with its unconventional design. Above all, Rocks Electric offers emission-free driving for two people in Europe starting from the age of 15. Due to the imaginative boundaries pushed by Industrial Design Student Lukas Wenzhöfer in crafting this design, the vehicle's name was embellished with "Extreme." The agile structure of Opel Rocks Electric aimed to transform into a fun mobility solution for all terrains through this spirited design.

Rebecca Reinermann, Vice President of Marketing at Opel/Vauxhall, remarked, "#OpelDesignHack led us down a new path of interaction and communication. For this project, Opel opened doors that are typically closed in the industry. The brand went beyond convention, allowing Opel enthusiasts to have a say in the production of a concept car candidly and transparently. The result is Rocks e-XTREME, a unique, cool version of our Rocks Electric product. The 'behind-the-scenes' of this model, born from a design competition, was closely followed by everyone. We accomplished a highly successful collaboration."

Industrial Design Student Lukas Wenzhöfer, who witnessed the realization of his dream vehicle by winning the competition, stated, "The concept model, with its off-road capabilities, inherently embodies the theme of freedom. The sporty and unconventional nature of Rocks e-XTREME demonstrates that electric mobility promises users more than just a mobility solution."

Produced in Opel's Concept Workshop

Opel engineers aimed to stay as close as possible to the 3D rendering while creating the unique concept model. Of course, this desire presented quite a challenge for the Opel team. Rocks e-XTREME boasts protruding wheels, front double-wishbone suspension, and a conspicuous roll cage in a vivid yellow hue, all contributing to a confident road presence. These design details emphasize the adventurous character of the concept model. The Opel Visor in the vehicle also received a reinterpretation; LED headlights and a turquoise-accented Opel logo found their place in the concept model. To reduce weight and support the performance of the electromotor, Opel Visor and fenders were produced using 3D printing. Another crucial addition was the carbon rear spoiler. This eye-catching spoiler carries the "e-XTREME" logo along with the "001" serial number and takes inspiration from the original Vectra GTS V8.

Rocks e-XTREME was produced through the process of creating a concept car. Opel's Concept Workshop experts meticulously brought the design to life step by step. The collective impression from the initial presentation was, "Rocks e-XTREME demonstrates how enjoyable and cool even a small electric vehicle can be."
